L.E.A.N. Business Traveler versus the Airport
The airport can be a huge challenge to navigate let alone making smart eating choices on the run. You may have no time between check in and boarding or even less time between connections. The array of choices as you walk from one gate to another may have you tempted to “grab and go” which may mean a double cheeseburger and fries or a super high calorie smoothie or coffee drink and muffin. Presume before you even leave your home for the airport that your choices will be limited and what is available to you may be deceptive in terms of calories and nutritional value.
So what to do?
Living Educated About Nutrition Strategy (L.E.A.N):
Plan, plan, plan! I cannot emphasize this enough! Make it a top priority when packing your bags to include healthy snacks that will pass through security. It can be as simple as a remembering you will be traveling when you are grocery shopping earlier in the week or a quick stop at a convenience store en route to the airport! If you do have time to spare at the airport head to the airport website to see what restaurant choices exist and even browse the menus when available. Visualize what you are likely to eat before you get to the airport. We are all busy, especially those of us that travel for work but it only takes a few moments to prepare yourself that will save you the stress of knowing you may be making choices that could impact your waistline.
Healthy snacks to go (remember, low sugar and low GI):
• raw almonds
• high protein low sugar protein bars
• fruit; bananas, apples, pears… your choice
• low sodium turkey jerky
• raw veggies
• travel packs of peanut butter
• mini canned tuna snack packs
