Healthy Summer Travel Tips

Stay fit and trim during your summer travels.

Traveling for work or pleasure affects your daily routine, but this is no reason to let your healthy lifestyle go to the wayside. Use these healthy summer travel tips to stay on track when you are traveling for business or pleasure.

Stay Hydrated

When the temperatures heat up, so does your body. When you are sweating more, you need to rehydrate by drinking ample amounts of water. When you start feeling thirsty, your body is already partially dehydrated. The body can sometimes mistake thirst for hunger, so staying hydrated is especially important in the summertime to keep your appetite under control.  Business travelers can carry a stainless steel water bottle to ensure they are getting enough water. Fill it up from a water fountain after you get through airport security and take it with you to business meetings throughout your travels.

Salads

Eating a hot meal when it is hot outside is not always appetizing. Salads make the perfect lunchtime meal, which can be eaten quickly when rushing to and from meetings. Load up your salad with vegetables, such as tomatoes, zucchini, carrots and cucumbers. Save on calories by dipping your fork in low-fat dressing and spreading it around your salad, rather than topping your salad with the entire side of dressing. Choose baked chicken or another lean protein to mix in with your salad. Avoid croutons or full-fat dressing, which can turn your healthy salad into a health disaster.

Fill up on Fruit

There are few things more refreshing than enjoying watermelon or strawberries on a warm summer day. These fruits are easy to pack, so you can take them as a snack wherever you go. A bowl of seasonal berries after your meal makes the perfect dessert.

Protein Bars

Carry a protein bar, such as a Kashi Go Lean Caramel Peanut Roll, wherever you go. Pack them in all of your bags. If you are running late, you will always have a healthy snack in your bag. Having a convenient snack with you will help you avoid choosing other convenience foods, such as doughnuts and chips.

Exercise Outdoors

Wake up 30 minutes early and take advantage of the perfect workout weather. Take a long walk or go for a jog to get in your daily cardio. If your hotel has a pool, swim laps to start out your day. Pack exercise bands in your suitcase, which are compact, to add resistance training to your fitness routine. If it’s not too hot, you can even walk or ride a bike to work or meetings.
