LeanTraveler.com is dedicated to bringing you solutions to the challenges many of us face when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle while traveling. We caught up with Sidney Jones to find out how she stays healthy while on-the-go!
What is your occupation, title and what you do?
I am a Hospital System Manager for a large biotechnology company.
How often do you travel?
I am in the car traveling everyday and I have at least one or two overnights per week.
Do you eat better at breakfast, lunch or dinner?
I would like to say I eat just as healthy at breakfast, lunch or dinner. I eat small healthy meals at least between five and six times per day.
What do you order?
I usually pack my own food. That way I know exactly how it is cooked. If I have to order at a restaurant while traveling, I order 6 oz of grilled chicken or fish, a fresh salad with no dressing and steamed veggies. I always tell the restaurant that I am allergic to butter and have food allergies so that my food is exactly how I want it.
When you’re at home, do you eat differently?
What are some of the biggest challenges with eating healthy while traveling?
When eating with co-workers they want you to eat the things that they like.
How do you overcome these challenges?
I think about the way I look and feel by eating healthy and know that I would be miserable if I did not.
When traveling, how hard is it to stick to a healthy lifestyle during business functions, while at restaurants or when following odd schedules?
There are a lot of things in life we don’t have control over, but we do have control of what goes in our mouth. Always make sure you pack your food before a trip and have healthy snack options with you. If I am flying, I always go to the local grocery store when I arrive at my destination. I make sure my hotel room has a refrigerator in the room.
Are there any other tips and tricks that you can share as to how you try to eat well and stick to the eating plan of your choice?
Have self control.
Do you exercise when you’re traveling? What do you do and how do you make sure to fit in a workout routine?
Yes, I exercise when I am traveling. I find a gym close by that offers fitness classes or I use the gym at the hotel if it is decent. I am sure to lift weights and get in my cardio. I stick to the plan that I would do at home. I either get up early to workout and/or workout after my day is done.
